Wireless Network Security: How to Use Kismet
Kismet is a wireless network detector / sniffer which can give you a huge amount of information over wireless networks. Wireless network security vulnerabilities are well documented, but often very difficult to understand for the common person. I'll show you how to install itself with Kismet under Linux, or used to compile Kismet.
First you need to go to remote-exploit.org and download and burn their Auditor CD. (If you do not know how to burn an ISO image that) you go to Google. ThisLinux version does not change or alter your hard drive, it will boot from the CD) to use a RAM drive (on the memory.
Auditor's kismet is not only a great tool for examining wireless network security with but it also has many other computer security tools on it, too.
Client window
Next, Kismet will start on the Linux version of the Start menu, and press Auditor.
Now for the wireless process / scan / tools kismet / kismet.
Once you are on KismetAsk later, instead of following a standard location for the kismet log files for analysis, simply click on the desktop or a temporary file.
Now I will show you how to use Kismet. When Kismet opens at first you find a green box with numbers and network names (see if you are in the vicinity) will not click away too much. (Even I can not show how to use it kismet, if you are not the wireless adapter, get a Gold Card Classic ORINICO outside of eBay.) Orninco The Classic Gold Card will be automaticallydetected by examiners linux.
Kismet The columns show the wireless network SSID (name), type of device (Access Point, Gateway) encryption or no encryption, an IP range and the number of packets. Kismet will pick up hidden networks with SSID Broadcast Disabled also Netstumbler not.
Then press H to display the "Help". This gives the nuts and bolts, how to use Kismet. If you are down to the network that you auditing and press "C", you all will KismetComputers that use the wireless access point / gateway. This screen presents the Kismet client MAC address, manufacture of wireless adapters, IP addresses and traffic.
Kismet: Help menu
Now to get out of this screen to "Q" key. Tab Down Main Kismet screen to another SSID and click on "I". This Kismet window displays detailed information about the wireless network. The Kismet detail screen shows the type of network (Infrastructrure / ad hoc), signal –Power, channel, encryption type, and much more.
Kismet will also give you the sound notification when new wireless networks are detected, or security or suspicious customers are within easy reach. Suspicious customers were people like you who are using Kismet or Networkstumbler. Unlike you, they might have wardriver venerable hack into networks.
Kismet Alert Page
You can prevent war drivers detect your wireless network by selecting a proper site survey, whichLimit switches will help bleed off, in order not required fields. You should write down the MAC address and a suspicious eye on your access logs. When the war mongers are really stupid just look out the window and look for cars with strange antennas.HA HA HA.
Kismet is more than just a tool to discover wireless networks, it can be used in conjunction with other tools, to crack WEP / WPA. Many sites will claim that WEP can be cracked in less that five minutes. This is only half the truth, because theycould still take many hours, days, months to collect enough packets to crack, too. Good luck and have fun while learning the more advanced applications of kismet.
